If there’s ever been a time of greater uncertainty in the office furniture than today, I for one want absolutely nothing to do with it!

We’re in the early stages of a post-pandemic recovery and no one really knows what how strong that recovery will be and what demand for our core products and services will look like.

Herman Miller is in the process of acquiring Knoll and no one really knows what impact that will have on overall distribution dynamics and the balance of power among the major manufacturers.

And just about any dealership with aspirations of long term growth and prosperity is embarked on a digital transformation of one kind or another, though there are probably as many opinions as to what form that digital transformation should take as there are dealerships.

In the face of all that, what’s a dealer to do?

At Avanto, we certainly don’t have all the answers but as part of a company that is in the front lines of the digital transformation campaign in the office furniture industry, I would like to offer a few suggestions:

First of all, NEVER lose sight of how you add value as a dealer and focus as much of your energy, attention and resources (as close to 100% as you can get to) as possible on that.

Developing a new way to procure office furniture and/or process your manufacturers’ invoices is certainly a part of your digital transformation but it has very little to do with how you as a dealer add value in the supply chain.

Where you do make a difference—and it’s a significant one—is in your ability to build relationships with customers and take their problems and objectives and respond with solutions.

What all that means could not be simpler: If your dealership isn’t already sales focused and sales focused with laser intensity, do something about it. Now!

Stop being so concerned about how to get things procured. There are solutions and technology companies who can handle that for you and do it better and more efficiently than you will ever be able to.

Obviously, we hope you will choose Avanto as your back office technology partner. But if not us, at least somebody!

When you do that, it will allow you to focus on your real value add in the pipeline: sales, design, service, relationship building and anywhere and anytime that your dealership is in a point of contact with a customer or prospect.

If you’ve got that aspect of the business down right, you can be confident of your ability to stay relevant and successful in the channel regardless of what comes down the pike. If you don’t, then no matter how slick your procurement processing might be, it will do nothing to keep you strong and growing.

Smart office furniture dealerships don’t even try to go through a digital transformation on their own. And that quickly translates into significant competitive advantage.
